Investing in a Resilient, Ecological and Sustainable Future
Global climate change is causing new weather patterns, environmental destruction and species extinction, posing serious threats to our health, food, shelter, safety, and life itself. Such changes mean that society will need to adapt as ecosystems transform, and humanity needs to be able to anticipate, prepare for and respond to hazardous events and disturbances.
Eco Energy Limited in New Zealand and Eco Energy Limited in Japan are recent initiatives based on ideas and methods from The Netherlands in order to improve our human response to climate change. The Eco Energy Group invests in less popular land for the creation of public gardens, parks and forests, for the generation of renewable energy, and for the development of homes and communities specifically designed to be RES — resilient, ecological and sustainable.

Situated in the warm and wet Northland region and about 130 kilometers North of the city of Auckland, we own this block of 735 hectares which is rented by the New Zealand Government on a contract spanning three decades for the purpose of government forestry. In parallel to the already established forest, we are working with New Zealand experts on the installation of renewable energy generation from wind and solar which will be used throughout the area, thereby replacing coal generated energy.

When we acquired The Vista it had already received consent for 29 large lifestyle homesteads throughout 320 hectares of newly planted forests along areas of indigenous vegetation, wetlands and other natural land forms, including several waterfalls and magnificent views over rolling land all the way to the Pacific Ocean. This block is located 50 km North of Auckland and we are currently working with the Department of Conservation to amend the existing consent in order to permit families to build a number of much smaller resilient, ecological and sustainable homes while returning the vast majority of the land to its natural condition.

Located near the top of New Zealand’s South Island, this block of 1,200 hectares borders State Highway 1, the backbone of New Zealand’s road transport system. Positioned just 10 kilometers South of the town of Blenheim with its nationally well-connected airport, it enjoys both some of the best wind patterns and highest sunshine hours in the country. We have planted the former sheep grazing farm with a wide variety of trees in the hope that it will become a showcase of new permanent forestry for the area, where in past centuries the original lush indigenous vegetation has been completely obliterated. In parallel to the new forest, we are working with New Zealand experts on the installation of renewable energy generation from wind and solar which will be used throughout the area, thereby replacing coal generated energy.

Overlooking the township of Clyde and the Clyde Dam which is of paramount importance to the energy security of New Zealand, this 1,140 hectares block gradually rises to a flat top where one has astounding views in all directions. The Future borders a very large sweet water lake and has some of the best microclimates in the country suitable for cultivating fruit. The famous resorts of Queenstown and Wanaka are each about 80 km from Clyde and can easily reached by road. The Future ranks extremely high among the most secure locations in the world in the face of the upheaval of climate change as it is very far from all coasts, has access to a large body of sweet water, and is climatically not expected to become unduly hot in the face of rising global temparatures. Also here, we are working with New Zealand experts on the installation of renewable energy generation from wind and solar which will be used throughout the area. Currently, the area of Clyde and adjoining towns enjoys sufficient white energy, but this source of energy is expected to dwindle as glaciers are melting so that it will need to be replaced by alternatively sourced renewable energy.
